Carlo Cerri (born September 16, 1610 in Rome ; † May 14, 1690 there ) was an Italian bishop and cardinal.

biography

He was born in Rome on September 14, 1610. His father, Antonio, a lawyer, made his fortune working for the Barberini family. He studied at the University of La Sapienza in Rome, where he received his doctorate in law in 1629. From 1637 he assisted his father in the office of the Avvocato Concistoriale and expanded his work under Cardinal Francesco Barberini as main trainee . When he entered the Sacra Rota in 1639, he made significant progress in his curial career. With the presentation of the motu proprio on May 30, 1639, he assumed the role of Uditore and replaced the late Alessandro Boccabella on December 9.

For thirty years of his life he was treasurer and dean of a very important college of judges. Alexander VII used him for spiritual duties by appointing him as examiner of the bishops. As a second role, Cerri was part of a commission of three prelates charged with overseeing the sanitary problems in Rome during the plague of 1656. In particular, he was entrusted with the protection of the Borgo, Ponte, Parione and Regola districts. Pope Clement IX elevated him to the rank of cardinal on November 29, 1669 on his deathbed along with 6 others, including Emilio Altieri, who later became Clement X. The Pope died the following December 9th without the new cardinals being able to receive their hats.

On May 19, 1670, Clement X appointed him cardinal deacon to Sant'Adriano at the Roman Forum . On August 17, 1670 he received the episcopal ordination ; he became bishop of Ferrara and papal legate of Urbino . Cerri stayed in Urbino for about three years and was characterized by the intensive activity on the occasion of the earthquake in Pesaro on April 14, 1672. In the second half of May 1673 he finally moved to Ferrara, where he held the office of bishop almost until his death.

He died in Rome on May 14, 1690 at the age of 79. He was buried in the Chiesa del Gesù , in the San Carlo family chapel, which he completed. On June 26th he was solemnly honored in Ferrara.
