Marcello Durazzo (born March 6, 1633 in Genoa , † April 27, 1710 in Faenza ) was an Italian cardinal and archbishop.

biography

Marcello Durazzo was born in Genoa in 1633 and came from a noble family of the Genoese Republic , which included many prominent personalities in their ranks, above all his father, Cesare Durazzo, the Doge of Genoa and who had married Giovanna Cervetto. He was also the nephew of Cardinal Stefano Durazzo .

Intending to pursue an ecclesiastical career, he enrolled at the University of Perugia , where he received his doctorate in utroque iure .

He was then appointed Apostolic Protonotary from January 31, 1660 and was governor of Rimini from 1662 to 1663 . In 1663 he was governor of Fano and vice-delegate in Bologna between 1664 and 1666 . It followed from September 30, 1666 to 1668 governor of Ancona , then from April 18 to November 1668 governor of the provinces of Campagna and Marittima. On December 14, 1668 he was finally appointed governor of Viterbo and then passed from July 18, 1670 to May 4, 1671 in the governorate of Perugia . He was appointed trainee lawyer at the Court of Justice of the Apostolic Signature in 1671 and was only then ordained a priest.

On May 4, 1671 he was elected titular archbishop of Chalcedon . From June 17 of the same year to 1672 he was Apostolic Nuncio in the Duchy of Savoy , until he was appointed Assistant to the Papal Throne on June 28. From 1672 he was apostolic visitor and governor in Loreto and on August 19, 1672 he became vice-legate in Avignon . On April 12, 1673, he was called to Portugal as Apostolic Nuncio and on May 5, 1685, he became the Nunciature in the Kingdom of Spain .

On September 2, 1686 he was appointed cardinal priest in the consistory and from September 2, 1686 appointed abbot of Malignano ( Cremona ). Moved from titular to full archbishop at the seat of Carpentras , he became Count of Comtat Venaissin on November 10, 1687 with the personal title of Archbishop.

He did not take part in the conclave of 1689 , in which Pope Alexander VIII was elected, and only later, on November 14, 1689, received the cardinal purple and the titular church of Santa Prisca . On November 27, 1690, he was again transferred to the bishopric of Ferrara , but retained the personal title of archbishop. He took part in the conclave of 1691 , which Innocent XII. elected pontiff, and was then transferred to the seat of Spoleto from August 27, 1691 with his pastoral duties, again with the personal title of archbishop .

From September 28, 1693, he was appointed legate in Bologna, he resigned from the reign of the Diocese of Spoleto on February 7, 1695 and moved to the bishopric of Faenza on November 11, 1697 , where he retained the title of archbishop.

After participating in the conclave of 1700 , in which Pope Clement XI. was elected Pope, he decided on February 21, 1701 for the titular church of San Pietro in Vincoli , later became a legate on June 6, 1701 in Romagna and remained in office until 1706.

Marcello Durazzo died on April 27, 1710 at 5 p.m. in his episcopal palace in Faenza, while his body was subsequently exposed to public veneration and buried in the city's cathedral.
