Francesco Ravizza (* 1615 in Orvieto , † 22 May 1675 in Rome ) was an Italian Roman Catholic bishop.

biography

He was born in Orvieto in 1615 . The date of his ordination is not known.

In 1664 he accompanied the Cardinal Nepot Flavio Chigi as personal secretary on his extraordinary embassy to France. On July 14, 1665, he was appointed Prefect of the Vatican Apostolic Archives by Pope Alexander VII to succeed Domenico Salvetti . He formally held this office until his death, although he had not exercised it after his transfer to Portugal . On February 17, 1666, he became secretary of the powerful Sacra Consulta , an office he held until February 22, 1668.

On March 19, 1667 he was appointed titular bishop of the Diocese of Sidon by Pope Chigi, who died only two months later . Until the beginning of 2017, the name of the person who had consecrated Monsignor Ravizza, who was considered to be the forerunner of one of the small episcopal lines of the Catholic Church , was unknown. However, in January 2017, a letter dated March 22, 1667, written in Rome, was discovered and is currently held in the Florence State Archives. Torquato Montauti, Chargé d'Affaires at the Apostolic Nunciature in the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, testifies that Francesco Ravizza was ordained bishop on March 20, 1667 in St. Peter's Basilica by Cardinal Neri Corsini . It now belongs to the line that begins with the French Cardinal Guillaume d'Estouteville .

On August 12, 1670 he was appointed Apostolic Nuncio of Portugal as the successor to Vincenzo Nobili and was replaced by Pier Francesco De Rossi in the office of Prefect until his death. He ended this diplomatic post on April 12, 1673, when he was replaced by the future Cardinal Marcello Durazzo .

He returned to Rome and died there on May 22, 1675 at the age of sixty. He was buried in the sacristy of St. Peter in the Vatican.
