Ascanio II Piccolomini (* 1596 in Florence , † September 14, 1671 in Rome ) was an Italian Roman Catholic Archbishop.

biography

He grew up in Florence , where his father was tutor to Cosimo II. De 'Medici , and completed his university studies in 1622. In 1622 he entered the service of Cardinal Francesco Barberini under the pontificate of Pope Urban VIII . He was then appointed tenth Archbishop of the Diocese of Siena in 1628 , where he remained until 1671. In 1671 he moved to Rome and died that same year.

Under the pontificate of Pope Alexander VII , born Fabio Chigi, he took care of some important projects for the realization and renovation of architectural and artistic works in Siena.

In his youth he also met Galileo Galilei at the Medici court and was also interested in natural sciences and mathematics . After Piccolomini had succeeded in having the original penalty imposed by the Holy Office changed in 1633, the Pisan scientist stayed in his Sienese residence (in the "Palazzo delle Papesse") from July to December 1633.

It was precisely during his stay in Siena that Galileo, as he informed his friend Elia Diodati in a letter , was able to calmly write a treatise that was only to be published in Leiden in 1638 under the title Discorsi e dimostrazioni matematiche intorno a due nuove scienze .
