Francesco Niccolini

Francesco Niccolini (* 1639 in Florence , † February 4, 1692 in Paris ) was an Italian Catholic archbishop and papal diplomat .

Life

He came from the old noble family of the Niccolini . He was born in Florence as the son of Senator Matteo Niccolini and his wife Lucrezia Arrighi. He was the nephew of the Florentine Archbishop Pietro Niccolini .

Francesco studied in Pisa Law where he acquired his degree in utroque jure . He then made a quick career in the administration of the Papal States and was governor of Fabriano in 1667 , of Camerino from May 1668 , of Ascoli from April 1669 and vice-governor of Avignon from 1677 to 1685 .

Since he was appointed to the nunciature in Portugal , he was appointed titular archbishop of Rhodus on September 10, 1685 . He was ordained a priest on November 3, 1685, and on December 16, 1685, he was ordained bishop in the church of the Jesuit College of Avignon by Jean-Baptiste Adhémar de Monteil de Grignan , coadjutor of the Archbishop of Arles .

On February 21, 1690 he was appointed nuncio in France , but remained nuncio in Portugal until September 10, 1690. After arriving in Paris on November 28 of the same year, he had his first meeting with King Louis XIV.

He died in Paris on February 4, 1692 and was buried in the Capuchin Church on Rue Saint-Honoré.
