Cesare Maria Antonio Rasponi
Cesare Maria Antonio Rasponi (born July 15, 1615 in Ravenna , † November 21, 1675 in Rome ) was an Italian cardinal .
Life
He was born in Ravenna in 1615 to Francesco and Clarice Vaini. When he was five years old, he lost his father and the mother took him and his brother Guido Paolo to Rome because they were related to the Barberini family. With Pope Urban VIII , a member of that family held the papal throne between 1623 and 1644. Rasponi studied Greek, Hebrew, moral philosophy and archeology at the Seminario Romano and graduated in law from the University of Bologna . He was first canon at the Basilica of San Lorenzo in Damaso and then at the Basilica of San Giovanni in Laterano , then an auditor with Cardinal Francesco Barberini and later with Cardinal Flavio Chigi, the future Pope Alexander VII.
He was sent to France to solve problems related to the chapter of Clairac Abbey . Other offices followed: Abbreviatore del Parco Maggiore , trainee lawyer at the Tribunal of the Apostolic Signature and consultant at the Sacra Consulta . When Pope Urban VIII died in 1644 and the Barberini family fell out of favor, Rasponi sought refuge in France and made a deep friendship in Paris with Queen Anne of Austria and Cardinal Giulio Mazzarino . They asked him to stay in France and offered him a generous pension.
On March 10, 1654 he was appointed secretary of the Sacra Consulta and later a consultor of the Roman and General Inquisition . Under the pontificate of Pope Alexander VII, he was secretary of the Congregation for Health and was actively involved in the epidemic that struck Rome. In 1662 his outstanding diplomatic talent was needed to settle a serious dispute between the Holy See and France.
Pope Alexander VII elevated him to cardinal in the consistory of January 14, 1664 , but did not publish this decision until February 15, 1666. On the following March 15, Rasponi received the consecration and the titular church of San Giovanni a Porta Latina . On March 7, 1667 he was appointed legato a latere of Urbino for three years . He took part in the conclave of 1667 , in which Pope Clement IX. was chosen. In 1668 he moved to Ravenna. He also took part in the conclave of 1669-1670 , in which Pope Clement X was elected. He later resigned from the embassy and returned to Rome.
He died on November 21, 1675 at the age of 60 and was buried at the side of his mother in the Basilica of St. John Lateran .
