The cardinal title of Cardinal Priest of Santa Maria Nuova was given by Pope Leo XIII. Rebuilt in 1887. The eponymous title of a cardinal deacon of Santa Maria Nuova had existed from the 7th century until 1661.

history

The origin of the cardinal title is a diakonia, which was probably already established by Pope Gregory the Great around 600 at the church of Santa Maria Antiqua . After this church was largely buried in an earthquake in 847, the Pope transferred the Diakonie to Santa Maria Nuova. Pope Alexander VII. Lifted the title in 1661 and rose in 1664 instead, the newly established Carmelite Santa Maria della Scala to Title Diakonie .

Pope Leo XIII. increased the number of cardinals significantly at the beginning of his long pontificate. In 1887 he revived the cardinal title Santa Maria Nuova as a cardinal priest.

Historical cardinal deacons

There are no reliable sources on the titleholders about the occupation of the original title at the Church of Santa Maria Antiqua. Even after the title was transferred to Santa Maria Nuova, clear attributions for the first few years are still missing, as cardinal deacons often only appear in the documents with their first names, but not with the name of their titular deaconry. The following list includes all the cardinal deacons who appear in various lists; any uncertainties can be found in the notes. In 1664 the title was recreated as Santa Maria della Scala .
