Francesco Gonzaga the Elder

Francesco Gonzaga (born March 15, 1444 in Mantua , † October 21 or 22, 1483 in Porretta ) was the son of Margrave Ludovico III. Gonzaga of Mantua and cardinal since 1461 .

His mother was Barbara von Brandenburg (* 1422; † November 7, 1481), a daughter of Margrave Johann von Brandenburg-Kulmbach .

Francesco studied in Padua and Pisa. Pope Pius II elevated him to cardinal in the consistory of December 18, 1461 . On August 12, 1464 he became Bishop of Brixen (Bressanone) and on August 20, 1466 Bishop of Mantua .

His son Francesco († 1507) was called "il Cardinalino".

His brother Rodolfo Gonzaga (1452–1495), Lord of Castiglione and Solferino, was the great-grandfather of St. Aloisius of Gonzaga .
