Carlo Carafa della Spina CRTheat (born April 21 or 22, 1611 in Rome ; † October 20, 1680 ibid) was Bishop of Aversa , Cardinal and Apostolic Nuncio .

family

He came from the Italian noble family Carafa and was the second son of Girolamo Carafa, Marchese of Castelvetere and Diana Vittori Borghese, a niece of Pope Paul V. He was nephew of Bishop Carlo Carafa . One brother was the future Cardinal Fortunato Ilario Carafa della Spina , another brother was the future Grand Master of the Order of Malta Gregorio Carafa .

Life

Carlo Carafa della Spina attended the seminar in Rome and obtained a doctorate in both rights. He was a regular cleric of the Theatines . Carafa worked in the papal judiciary, among other things, in the Apostolic Signature and was vice delegate in Bologna .

On July 13, 1644, he succeeded his uncle of the same name as Bishop of Aversa. He received his episcopal ordination on December 27, 1644 in Rome by the Bishop of Lucca , Cardinal Marcantonio Franciotti .

Between 1653 and 1654 he was nuncio in Lucerne (appointed on December 20, 1652, departure from Lucerne on November 26, 1654). He mediated in the Swiss Peasants' War between arguing groups in the city of Lucerne and contributed to the fact that the country pastors were not convicted in secular courts. In 1654 he visited the diocese of Chur and prevented the bishop from selling church property to the city. In the conflict over the restoration of the Reichenau monastery , he sided with the Bishop of Constance . After that he was a nuncio in the Republic of Venice for a short time . In 1658 he moved to Vienna , which he held until 1664.

Created cardinal by Pope Alexander VII in the consistory of January 14, 1664, Carafa della Spina was appointed legate of Bologna in the same year. He took part in the conclave of 1667 , from which Clement IX. emerged as Pope. He also took part in the election of Clement X from 1669 to 1670 . Also at the conclave of 1676 , on the Innocent XI. was elected, he participated. He was chamberlain to the Holy College of Cardinals from 1676 to 1678 .

Carlo Carafa della Spina died on October 19, 1680 around 5 a.m. in Rome. He was buried in the church of Santissimo Nome di Gesù .
