biography

Franciotti was born on September 8, 1592 in Lyon to Curzio Franciotti and Chiara Balbani and comes from an old Luccesian family.

Pope Urban VIII raised him to the rank of cardinal in pectore in the consistory on November 28, 1633 . Four years later, on March 30, 1637, he was appointed Bishop of Lucca and officially made cardinal. The episcopal ordination took place on April 19, 1637.

In the same year, on August 17, 1637, he became cardinal priest of San Clemente and on December 19, 1639, cardinal priest of Santa Maria della Pace .

On May 21, 1640 he was appointed legate of Romagna. After relations between the Holy See and the Duke of Parma, Odoardo Farnese , had deteriorated, Franciotti had to deal with the most Farnese troops. On November 29, 1642 he received the news of the appointment of Antonio Barberini as the new legate of Romagna and returned to Rome. He never left Rome again and after the death of Urban VIII in 1645 gave up the diocese of Lucca.

Franciotti died on February 8, 1666 and was buried in the church of Il Gesù .
