Fabrizio Verospi (* 1571 in Rome ; † January 27, 1639 there ) was an Italian cardinal and judicial officer of the Curia .

Life

Verospi was born in Rome in 1571 to Girolamo Verospi and his wife Penelope Gabrielli. He was the uncle of Girolamo Verospi , who was later elevated to cardinal as well.

He studied law in Rome and Perugia and then at the University of Bologna , where he received his doctorate in utroque iure . He then worked as house prelate, auditor of Fermo and, in 1595, as advisor for the Apostolic Signature . In 1597 he was appointed governor of Cesena and then of Fermo.

In 1611 Verospi became a cleric of the Apostolic Chamber and auditor of the Holy Roman Rota . He held the latter office for 16 years and built a reputation for providing legal advice, detailed and lengthy judgments, and setting precedents .

In 1619 he was appointed extraordinary nuncio in Vienna and was soon responsible for the arrest of Cardinal Melchior Khlesl , who had refused to take action against the Protestants after the Bohemian uprising . In 1622 he was reappointed extraordinary nuncio to Vienna to act as a witness for the marriage of Emperor Ferdinand II to Princess Eleonora Gonzaga . At the same time he supervised the transfer of Cardinal Khlesl to Rome.

From 1623 to 1627 Verospi served as governor of Perugia and Umbria . Verospi developed a close relationship with Carlo Barberini, brother of the new Pope Urban VIII (elected in 1623). The Verospi family later commissioned the negotiation of the marriage of Carlos' son Taddeo Barberini to Anna Colonna in October 1627, which he concluded to the satisfaction of all concerned.

In the midst of the marriage negotiations, Verospi was elevated to cardinal on August 30, 1627 and appointed cardinal priest of San Lorenzo in Panisperna . In 1633 he decided to move to the titular church of Santa Maria della Pace .

Verospi died on January 27, 1639 and was buried in his family grave in the church of Santissima Trinità dei Monti .
