Cereatae

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In ancient times Cereatae was a village about 100 km east of Rome in the area of Arpinum , which was dedicated to Ceres . It was in what is now the municipality of Veroli .

156 BC The general Gaius Marius was born here, in honor of whom it was named Cereatae Marianae . With this name it obtained city rights.

Presumably the city was abandoned during the Migration Period . It was not until 1035 that the Casamari monastery was founded in the ruins , the name of which goes back to Gaius Marius (Casa Mari = House of Marius). Finds from Cereatae are shown in a museum in the monastery.
