Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare
The Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare (INFN) ( German: National Institute for Nuclear Physics) is a research company for nuclear, particle and astroparticle physics based in Rome . The president is Antonio Zoccoli (2019-).
history
It was founded on August 8, 1951 to continue the physical research that was founded by Enrico Fermi in Rome in the 1930s .
In the second half of the 1950s, the INFN in Frascati built the first Italian particle accelerator , an electron synchrotron. The first electron-positron accelerator ADA (Anello Di Accumulazione) was built there in the 1960s under the leadership of Bruno Touschek . At the same time, the INFN began working with CERN on the construction of even larger and more powerful particle accelerators.
INFN today
Today the INFN works with CERN , Fermilab and other large research institutions and makes important contributions to grid computing .
Today the INFN has locations in most Italian university cities and operates four national research institutions:
- LNF (Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati)
- LNL ( Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro )
- LNGS ( Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso )
- LNS (Laboratori Nazionali del Sud) in Sicily
It is the largest sponsor of high energy physics in Italy. Researchers at universities are mostly affiliated with the INFN. 2012 INFN founded in L'Aquila , the Graduate School Gran Sasso Science Institute .
