During the pontificate of Pope Urban VIII he went to Rome and was appointed vice-legate in Bologna and governor of Fano and Ascoli Piceno . In the absence of Cardinal Antonio Barberini , he was made legate to Ferrara . He was later appointed cleric in the Apostolic Chamber .

Before the Pope made Imperiali governor, he elevated him to cardinal, but the elevation was in pectore until Imperiali resigned as governor in 1654. His cardinal elevation was published in the consistory on March 2, 1654 and he was appointed cardinal priest of the titular church of San Crisogono .

Tomb in Sant'Agostino

Lorenzo Imperiali took part in the 1655 conclave which Pope Alexander VII elected.

In 1660 he was reappointed Governor of Rome by Pope Alexander, but in 1662 he fell victim to a conflict with the Corsican Guard . Contemporary John Bargrave relates that François , Duke of Créquy and ambassador of France , visited Rome with his wife. A serious misunderstanding led to the ambassador's wife's carriage being attacked and shot at by papal troops of the Corsican Guard.

As a punishment, Imperiali was transferred as a legate to the newly created legate in the Marche province . He later resigned his legacy and went to Paris to explain his conduct to King Louis XIV of France.

Imperiali took part in the papal conclave in 1667 , which Pope Clement IX. elected, and at the conclave 1669-1670 , the Pope Innocent XI. chose. During these conclaves, Imperiali was a leading member of the liberal movement Squadrone Volante . It is believed that this group initiated the election of Giulio Rospigliosi as Pope Clement in 1667 .

Imperiali died in Rome on September 21, 1673 and was buried in the chapel of St. Thomas of Villanova in the Basilica of Sant'Agostino . A grandson of his brother, Giuseppe Renato Imperiali (born 1651), who had lived in his household since 1662, was to be made cardinal in 1690.
