The Squadrone Volante ( German  "flying squadron" ) was a loose association of cardinals in the 17th century.

history

Under the leadership of Cardinal Decio Azzolini (1623–1689), they formed a voting group at the conclaves of 1655 , 1667 and 1669/70 , which saw itself as independent of the great monarchs ( Emperor , Spain , France and Naples ). In two of these three conclave, thanks to Azzolini's diplomatic skill, they succeeded in pushing through their candidates in the papal election: in 1655 Cardinal Fabio Chigi, who was Pope as Alexander VII , and in 1667 Giulio Rospigliosi, who was named Pope Clement IX. assumed.
