Margherita Osswald-Toppi (born January 17, 1897 in Anticoli Corrado ( resident in Zurich ), † March 28, 1971 in Rome ) was a Swiss painter and sculptor . She was known for her sensitive, impressionist painting.

life and work

Margherita Osswald lived with her husband, also an artist, in Ascona in the Casa San Cristoforo at the old port since 1919 . Before and during the Second World War, her works still had a pronounced historical-patriotic orientation. In 1933 she created two female figures for the Chiasso station concourse. These symbolize Switzerland and Italy.

In 1939 she created the facade painting Grape Harvest for the Grotto ticinese at the Swiss National Exhibition in Zurich and in 1941 the wall painting on the house "zur Münz" in Zurich, which has since been destroyed.

In 2009 the “Museum Hermann Hesse” in Montagnola presented the exhibition: “Women on the edge ... or the other perspective - Hermann Hesse and Maria Holzleitner, Elisabeth Rupp and Margherita Osswald-Toppi”. All three women were friends with Hesse.
