Santa Severa is a district of Santa Marinella and Tolfa in the metropolitan city of Rome .
Santa Severa is a seaside resort on the Tyrrhenian Sea . It is the successor to the Etruscan port city of Pyrgi .
history
Pyrgi was founded in the 3rd century BC. To the Roman colony. The Christian girl Severa is said to have suffered her martyrdom on the beach in this city in 298 AD. She became the local patroness. The name Santa Severa has been recorded instead of Pyrgi since 850.
The castle on the coast was built in the 9th century. The attached fortified village takes up about a third of the Roman colony. The remains of the ancient port lie under water in front of the castle. South of Santa Severa three temples of the Etruscan Pyrgi have been excavated since 1954.
North of the medieval village, after the Second World War, a residential and holiday complex was built along the beach that stretches to Santa Marinella. The part of the settlement east of the railway line belongs to the municipality of Tolfa . Santa Severa has a train station on the FR5 regional line from Roma Termini to Civitavecchia.
The place can also be reached via the exit of the same name on the A12 Autostrada Azzurra motorway from Rome to Civitavecchia.
Current situation
The historic castle village has been renovated in recent years. Tourist facilities and museums emerged. Due to the unclear division of responsibilities between the municipality and the Lazio region , the necessary restoration of the castle itself could not yet be completed. Therefore, the castle was not yet accessible in spring 2013. From April 25 to May 4, 2014, the castle was again made accessible to visitors during guided tours.
In the future, the castle is to house the Museo del Mare e della Navigazione Antica (Museum of the Sea and Ancient Seafaring), which will be temporarily located in a building in the castle village until the renovation is complete. In 2013, some scenes from the German television film "Summer in Rome" were shot in front of the Castello Odescalchi in Santa Severa.
