Pietro Lasagni

Pietro Lasagni (born June 15, 1814 in Caprarola , Italy , † April 19, 1885 in Rome ) was Curia Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

Lasagni, from a wealthy family, studied from 1828 onwards at the seminary in Rieti and later at the Seminario Romano . In May 1840 he received his doctorate in canon law. He was ordained a priest on December 17, 1836 .

He went to Paris and in 1842 became secretary of the local Internuntius and in 1843 auditor of the nunciature. In January 1846 he presented the Archbishop of Aix, Joseph Bernet , who had been created cardinal , the red biretta, and in 1850 he took on the same task from his immediate superior, the Nuncio in France Raffaele Fornari . In 1851 he returned to Rome and was in 1853 by Pope Pius IX. appointed Apostolic Delegate in Viterbo. From 1856 to 1859 Lasagni performed the same function in Forlí. After Forli became part of the Kingdom of Italy and Lasagni refused to take repressive measures, Cardinal Secretary of State Giacomo Antonelli accused him of inaction in June 1859. L'Osservatore Romano, on the other hand, praised Lasagni's decision of 1859 in an obituary in 1885. When he returned to Rome, he was particularly responsible for poor relief. In 1863 he became a cleric in the Apostolic Chamber and in 1868 he was appointed Apostolic Delegate in the province of Frosinone, which he remained until 1870. In 1875 Pius IX appointed him. as secretary of the Consistorial Congregation , the College of Cardinals and the Conclave . In the latter position he was also involved in the conclave of 1878 .

Pope Leo XIII. accepted Lasagni on December 13, 1880 in pectore to the college of cardinals. In 1882 the appointment was made public and Cardinal Lasagni became Cardinal Deacon of Santa Maria della Scala . In March 1885 he became secretary of the papal memoranda.

Cardinal Lasagni died a month later and was buried in the Campo Verano cemetery in Rome.
