Agostino Carracci
Agostino Carracci (born August 16, 1557 in Bologna , † March 22, 1602 in Parma ) was an Italian painter and engraver .
Life
He was destined to be a goldsmith, but then, at the encouragement of his cousin Lodovico Carracci , devoted himself to painting, which he learned under Fontana, whereupon he continued his education by traveling to Lombardy and Venice . But he did not miss the study of science and poetry, so that his teaching activity in the academy was particularly effective in this regard.
When the Carthusians in Bologna gave a picture of Carracci ( The Communion of St. Jerome ) preference over the achievements of its competitors, including his brother Annibale Carracci , he is said to have persuaded him out of jealousy to devote himself exclusively to the engraving. Carracci later painted the frescoes of the Palazzo Farnese in Rome together with his brother .
When Agostino's work was better than that of his jealous brother, he is said to have pushed him away from work again. With a broken heart, Carracci went to Duke Ranuccio I Farnese in Parma , whom he portrayed twice. In the Palazzo del Giardino he still painted the frescoes of heavenly, earthly and commercial love for the prince, which he had completed with the exception of one figure when he died on March 22nd, 1602.
Its main importance is in the field of copperplate engraving . The Dutchman Cornelis Cort had gained great influence in Italy at that time through his firm and energetic manner, and Carracci took it as a model, whereby at the same time Ch. Alberti's more painterly treatment of the engraving had an effect on him. He gained greater freedom and variety in the stroke positions and drew in a firm and magnificent manner. His hatching, carried out with a powerful hand, always expresses the form correctly. Carracci is an important link between the engravers of the 16th century and those of the Rubens school; although not as picturesque as the latter, it has paved the way for them. The number of his leaves is about 270; some of them are made according to his own inventions, some after Italian masters of the 16th century.
Carraci's pornographic drawings were circulated in France nearly two hundred years later.
