Fountain and pond

The Ziegelwiese is an inland island surrounded by the Saale River to the west and the Mühlgraben to the east , located in the Saaleaue district of the city of Halle (Saale) and one of the city's most popular local recreation areas.

location

The inner island can be reached from the east via the Peißnitzstraße and the Steinmühlenbrücke , from the west from the Peißnitzinsel and the Peißnitzbrücke , from the north via the Riveufer and the Ochsenbrücke and from the south via the Würfelwiese and the Dreierbrücke . It is assigned to the local recreation area Peißnitz.

history

The Archbishop of Magdeburg, Rudgar von Veltheim , granted the area under the foundation privilege of July 5, 1121, at that time a remote pasture called "Großer Werder", to the Neuwerk monastery . After Cardinal Albrecht dissolved the influential monastery in 1530, its extensive land holdings, including Werder, were administered by the New Abbey . After the Reformation, Werder came to the Giebichenstein office .

In the 17th century, the administrators of the Magdeburg Archbishopric also used the meadow as a festival area. Especially under the splendor-loving Duke August von Sachsen-Weißenfels , theater and ballet performances as well as fireworks were organized here. After Halle and the entire archbishopric fell to the Electorate of Brandenburg after his death in 1680 and belonged to Prussia from 1701 , the area began to be used more economically. The Giebichenstein office built a large brickworks near the neighboring church gate , which brought the clay needed for brick-burning from Werder, which was soon given the name Ziegelwiese by the population. Until 1868, access to the meadow was only possible for a fee from a “Dreier” via the Dreierbrücke located between Würfelwiese and Ziegelwiese.

Towards the end of the 19th century, the Hallische Beautification Association had trees planted to provide shade on the wayside of the Ziegelwiese. In 1911, the city of Halle finally acquired the entire area as property. A sporting activity that was already taking place on the Ziegelwiese at that time was ice skating, in which the northern half of the meadow was submerged in order to use it as an ice rink.
