The Sophienhafen was an inland port on the Saale in the city of Halle (Saale) .

The port is located on the Saline peninsula, near the center of Halle. The port basin is located on the left bank of the river between the river kilometers 92.6 Gimritz lock and 93.7 city lock . It is approx. 200 m long and 50 m wide.

history

The Sophienhafen was laid out in 1857. Initially it served mainly as winter quarters for up to 30 barges to protect against ice on the Saale. As a transshipment point, it stood in the shadow of the ports on the Middle Elbe and was of secondary importance. Improvements came with the expansion of the network of chain steamers ( chain shipping on the Elbe and Saale ) of the Dresden company Ketten AG , which ran to Halle, the start of paddle-wheel steamship traffic through the Elbe and Saale steamship company and the opening of the port railway, which connects to the regular-gauge rail network manufactured.

In the years before the First World War , the Sophienhafen proved to be unsuitable for handling the growing volume of goods and goods due to its central location and the inadequate navigability of the Saale (only for ships up to 400 GRT ). From 1916 the construction of a new port was planned. With the port of Halle in the Trotha district , a new port was built from 1926. The Sophienhafen was taken out of service.

Port railway

On January 9, 1895, the Sophienhafen received a rail connection with the opening of the Halle port railway. With this, the Sophienhafen gained importance as a cargo handling point. A number of commercial and (tank) storage companies settled there, including the Speditionsverein Mittelelbische Hafen- und Lagerhaus AG, the German-American Petroleum Company and the German-Russian Naphta Import Company. Remnants of the track systems are still in Hafenstrasse today.

Todays situation

The Sophienhafen is unused today. Its facilities have largely fallen into disrepair. There is still a multi-storey storage building as well as a building on the southern edge of the basin, which was partly on stilts in the harbor basin and was used for loading. The city is currently pursuing concepts for use as a sports boat harbor. The completely renovated storage building was converted into a residential building through the construction of loft apartments . Further houses are being built or have already been completed. Parts of the bank reinforcement are still used as piers for ships belonging to the Magdeburg Waterways and Shipping Office (WSA) , which is also the responsible authority for the shipping administration. The port railway no longer exists today. After the fall of the Wall, it was dismantled except for a few remains. Parts of the route are now used as a footpath and bike path, such as B. the port railway bridge built in steel framework construction ( 51 ° 28 '17 "  N , 11 ° 57' 24.6"  E ).
