The Gerbstedt – Friedeburg railway was a single-track, non-electrified railway line in Saxony-Anhalt . It connected Gerbstedt on the Halle Klaustor – Hettstedt railway with Friedeburg (Saale) .

history

The railway line, licensed as a small railway, was built in 1899/1900 by the Halle-Hettstedter Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft (HHE), which also operated on the line until its nationalization in 1945/49. The route, which had no special features, first led uphill in an easterly direction from Gerbstedt, then followed the valley of the Lohbach and then that of the Schlenze in a moderate gradient to Friedeburg.

Except for the rush hour to Friedeburg and the transport of coal and agricultural products, the route remained meaningless. The port of Friedeburg did not have any significant transport volume except in the early years, and there was no handling during the First World War . After 1918 only agricultural products were handled. There was no harbor crane and the harbor basin became increasingly muddy, so that transhipment was always low. Although the port for the Mansfeld ironworks was expanded from the mid-1920s, the construction work, which included a turntable in 1937, made slow progress. During the Second World War , the construction work continued as armaments were to be loaded, but the construction work never came to an end. In the 1950s, the port's sidings were finally removed.

In 1962 the traffic on the line was stopped, but since the railway line was to serve as a diversion route in the event of war, the tracks were retained. The line was only dismantled in spring 1974.

In the 1960s, the National People's Army connected the Gerbstedt – Friedeburg line with the Könnern – Rothenburg line on the opposite side of the river, which was only accessible by ferry , for a short time with the help of a pontoon bridge .
