The village church of Lochwitz

Lochwitz is a village in the eastern district of Mansfeld-Südharz (Saxony-Anhalt). It belongs to the village of Heiligenthal , which is part of the city of Gerbstedt .

location

Lochwitz is one kilometer west of Heiligenthal on the dirt road to Freist . This is paved towards Heiligenthal and is the most important connection to the outside world. In addition, the small muddy road Wiesenweg , which becomes Wiesengrund , connects the place with the country road 154 in the north. The Schlenze river runs through Lochwitz , it is located at the confluence of the Weidengrund and the Bretzgrund (Bretz comes from Slavic and means birch), through which the dirt road runs to Freist, in the Schlenzetal. Both grounds are forested and limit the Lindenberg in the southeast. A small trickle begins in Lochwitz and flows into the Schlenze in the village. The village itself is elongated in a north-northeast-south direction, has an area of 6 hectares and is around 500 m long. It is divided into a southern part, which is 100 m wide, a central, wider part, which is 250 m wide and in which the village church of Sankt Pankraz is located, and a small extension in the north. besides, there are still few houses in the two grounds. North of Lochwitz, the Schlenze turns northeast towards Zabenstedt . In addition to the Lindenberg already mentioned, there is also the Goldberg near Heiligenthal, from which you can see Lochwitz well, the Seeberg towards Zabenstedt, on which a mighty boulder lay, and another Goldberg in the same direction.

Lochwitz lake holes

Once there were three water-filled lakes in the Schlenzetal near Lochwitz at the confluence of the Kohlgrund basin, the salt water of which continually flowed into the Schlenze and powered a mill. However, there were no above-ground tributaries. Only the drainage of the smallest sometimes dried up. The two larger holes were 6 - 8 m apart. The holes had steep walls, the largest and eastern was measured in 1805 with the plumbing method 39.06 m and in 1807 37.2 m deep. It was a little less than 300 m in circumference and its water never froze over in winter and steamed heavily in autumn and winter. In the years 1717 and 1722 the water of the sea holes boiled heavily, presumably due to earth or water ingress. Many geologists have examined the holes, the mining captain Johann Carl Freiesleben justified the existence of the sea holes with water-bearing underground limestone layers, which extend on several floors from the landscape around Helbra to the Saale and express water below the lake holes. In the 1870s, the water level probably sank through the key tunnel , which damaged the layers and continues to drain them today. The Schlenze has also had less water since then. After the lakes had dried up, the farmer Hertel, who owned the field, filled them in. The mill, which was previously fed by the sea holes, was badly damaged by a flood on July 14, 1910 and then demolished. Their stones were used for repairs to the Zabenstedter church tower.
