The church

The Protestant village church of St. Peter and Paul stands on a hill in the municipality of Berga in the district of Mansfeld-Südharz in Saxony-Anhalt . It belongs to the parish area in Kelbra Kirchenkreis Eisleben-Sömmerda the Evangelical Church in Central Germany .

history

This church was built in 1898 on the previous church built between 1709 and 1711. There used to be a prehistoric cult and court place on this property . Later the square was fortified before the first church was built. Remains of this defense system can still be seen.

particularities

  • Earlier, when Berga was the seat of an archpriest , there was a main church in which the clergymen of the Berga ban met to gather for the synod , because the ban consisted of two districts, namely Berga above and Berga below. This fact also explains the magnificent building and its location.
  • The relief of the Man of Sorrows from the 14th century, some tombs and the choir windows are noteworthy in terms of cultural history .
  • The spacious cemetery is surrounded by a wall dating from the Middle Ages.
