At the beginning of the 9th century Göllingen was first mentioned as Gellinge in a list of the goods lent by Archbishop Lullus († 786) of Mainz to the monastery of Hersfeld von Free . The history of Göllingen is linked to the Benedictine monastery of Göllingen, which was founded in the 11th century . coat of arms

The coat of arms was designed by the heraldist Karl-Heinz Fritze from Niederorschel. It represents the former monastery building.

Structures and waters

monastery

Göllingen is known for the Göllingen monastery with its 16-column crypt . Experts assume that similar buildings can only be found in southern countries. The Benedictine monastery dates back to the 11th century. It was founded around 1012 by the Hersfeld Abbey , which is why Göllingen later became a Hessian exclave . In 1606 the monastery was closed by the Hessian landgraves after they introduced the Reformation . It then served as the Electoral Hesse domain until the area of Hesse was handed over to Schwarzburg in 1816 . During this time the monastery complex deteriorated more and more into ruins. The monastery tower festival takes place every year in autumn. The tower and the crypt can be visited.

church

Not far from the monastery tower is the Protestant church , which was built in 1722 as a baroque hall. In the churchyard there are numerous historical tombstones, some from the 11th and 12th centuries.

Wipper tunnel

The Kleine Wipper , an arm of the Wipper river, was led through a tunnel by monks of the time over a length of 430 meters. It was first mentioned in a document in 1404.

Events

Every year on the second weekend in September, the Klosterturmfest takes place in Göllingen. The three-day village festival takes place at the foot of the monastery tower, in the historic center of Göllingen. Various musical contributions are offered in a marquee and on an open-air stage. The culinary offer includes typical grill specialties, such as the famous Thuringian roster or local specialties such as fat brakes with herbal salt .

Economy and Infrastructure

Establishments

Agriculture and handicrafts are predominant. Göllingen is a former mining town of the potash industry, but of minor importance (former Günthershall union). During the GDR times there was the nationally important nationally owned enterprise (VEB) Inducal Göllingen here. Since 2012, there has been a solar park on the previously unused industrial park to the west of the town .

traffic

Until December 10, 2006, the place had a stop on the Kyffhäuserbahn . Passenger traffic has now been stopped here. On August 9, 2012, a bypass was opened south of the town on Landesstraße 2290.
