history

Today's Schönewerda was formed from two districts. This can still be seen today from its unstrut side or from the air. It was not until 1936 that the places Eßmannsdorf and Schönewerda were combined to form the municipality of Schönewerda. Whereby Eßmannsdorf to the east is much older than Schönewerda. It already appears as Hessimesdorf in the Hersfeld tithe directory that was created between 880 and 899 .

Since after the death of the Count Palatine Friedrich IV of Bottendorf, the villages of Eßmannsdorf and Schönewerda also fell to the Counts of Anhalt, the day of his death must be taken as the first mention. Eßmannsdorf, which is over 1200 years old, was the village of Hessimo. Schönewerda itself could have originated under the influence of immigrating Flemings in the 12th century. The syllable "Werda" in the place name is derived from the term Werder and indicates that the place is an island. In the Middle Ages, Schönewerda could only be entered via drawbridges. The Unstrut community was on a trade route, the so-called Kärnerweg, which led from the pass near Harras via Querfurt to Halle and via Allstedt to Eisleben. The Counts of Orlamünde, the owners of this spot, confirmed special rights for the merchants of the place in two documents from 1310 and 1325. After the Thuringian Count War (1342–1345), the Counts of Orlamünde lost their power. Completely over-indebted, they sold the Wendelstein to the landgrave court judge Christian von Witzleben, who was enfeoffed with the village of Schönewerda by his sovereign. Despite the name Ratskeller, Schönewerda had no town charter, but a market could be held and this was already a great privilege. In the Saxon fratricidal war (1444–1451) between the two sons of Elector Friedrich the arguable, Eßmannsdorf and Schönewerda were also badly affected by the war hordes. In 1628, Schönewerda lost its independence to the Lords of Geusau . The Swedes 'passage in the Thirty Years' War was bad for the Unstrut community. Hardly a stone was left unturned. The place had hardly recovered from the turmoil of the war when a major fire destroyed everything again in 1753. In the turmoil of the Napoleonic tyranny, Schönewerda was sacked by French horsemen in 1806.

On April 1, 1999 Schönewerda was incorporated into Roßleben. The city of Roßleben, in turn, merged on January 1, 2019 with the city of Wiehe and the communities of Donndorf and Nausitz to form the new city and rural community of Roßleben-Wiehe.
