Donndorf Monastery (Latin: Monasterium monialium in Thundorff ) is a former Cistercian abbey in the district of Roßleben-Wiehe of the same name in the Kyffhäuserkreis in Thuringia .

location

Donndorf Monastery is located west of Donndorf behind a forest to the south-east, connected by a connecting road to Donndorf on the edge of the Thuringian Basin .

history

The monastery was first mentioned in a document in 1250. Before 1272 it is very likely that the Cistercian women of the Bachra Monastery moved to Donndorf.

During the Peasants' War in 1525, insurgent peasants stormed the area. In the course of the Reformation , the nunnery was closed and converted into a Latin school. Since 1540 the barons of Werthern-Wiehe have determined the monastery , and since 1869 the barons Werthern-Bachra. 170 hectares of land and 250 hectares of forest were cultivated. In 1928 the monastery was incorporated into Donndorf. In 1945 the von Werthern family was expropriated without compensation. 1994–1996 the most important buildings of the monastery were renovated at a cost of 6 million euros. In 1996 the rural home elementary school moved in .
