from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dennis J. Bennett (born October 28, 1917 in London , † November 1, 1991 ) was an American priest of the Episcopal Church and pioneer of the Charismatic Movement .

Life

Bennett was born in London, but grew up in California. He studied at San Jose State College and the Chicago Theological Seminary. After completing his studies, he first worked as a pastor in a congregational church, but in 1951 decided to transfer to the Episcopal Church to become a priest there.

On April 3, 1960, Bennett confessed in his church, St. Mark's Episcopal Church , Van Nuys , that he had received baptism in the Holy Spirit and spoken language ("speaking in tongues"). Bennett was asked to resign, but the new experiences of being baptized in the Spirit and speaking in tongues continued to spread throughout the ward. The events surrounding the Bennett Confession are seen as the origin of the charismatic movement in the Episcopal Church.
