history

On May 1st, 1236, the village was first mentioned in a document with a slightly different name. The place belonged to the so-called kitchen villages of the Vockstedt-Artern rule. At that time, twelve houses had to pay 18 groschen of holy cow interest per year. The Landwehr , consisting of ramparts and moats, which protected the western border from the rule of Vockstedt, led to the village . The village church of St. Kilian was built in 1747/1748. On October 5, 1995, Schönfeld was incorporated into Artern. In the meantime, Schönfelder Straße has been populated with commercial and trading houses. Two huge earth walls tower between Artern and the Schönfeld district. They announce the emerging federal highway 71 .
