Horsmar is a village with 574 inhabitants in the north of the Unstrut-Hainich district ( Thuringia ). It is part of the municipality of Unstruttal with its seat in Ammern .

geography

location

Horsmar is located in the upper Unstrut valley between the towns of Dingelstädt in the northwest and Mühlhausen in the east. The district extends in the west and north to the Mühlhausen Landgraben , which separates the Catholic Eichsfeld to the west from the former Protestant area of the Free Imperial City of Mühlhausen to the east. In the south it goes to the B 247, which runs along the Mark, a high plateau between the valleys of Luhne and Unstrut. The neighboring towns are Zella in the west, Beberstedt in the north, Eigenrode in the northeast, Dachrieden in the southeast and Lengefeld in the south. Horsmar is located at an altitude between about 265 m above sea level in the Unstruttal and 460 m above sea level below the Eigenröder Warte on the northern corner of the district.

Districts

The scattered settlement area Beyrode is located east of the main town in the Unstrut valley .

geology

The near-surface geological subsoil is formed by the limestone of the Upper Muschelkalk . Small areas of alluvial gravel are only present in the Unstrutaue. However, the rubble consists mainly of limestone.

geomorphology

The Schneidertal runs through the district of Horsmar in the north. It is one of the dry valleys on the Muschelkalk plateau north of the Unstrut. The brook in the Schneidertal valley only rarely carries water after heavy rain events and after the snow has melted. Its stream bed is dry and stony for most of the year. It is one of the so-called stone trenches . Another karst phenomenon are the sinkholes in the Anroth and in the Siechenholz, which were created by the leaching of gypsum in the subsoil and the subsequent collapse of the cave roof.

Land use

The corridor is partly used intensively for agriculture. With the Siechenholz in the north, the Anroth in the northeast and smaller forests on the Mühlhäuser Landgraben, however, there are also extensive forest areas in the district of Horsmar.

history

The Eichsfeld and the area of the Free and Imperial City of Mühlhausen with Horsmar around 1759 (The map contains some errors: see map description on Commons)

For centuries, Horsmar was part of the sphere of influence of the Free and Imperial City of Mühlhausen . In 1565 the town had a population of 85.

In 1802 Horsmar fell together with Mühlhausen to the Kingdom of Prussia , from 1807 to 1813 to the Kingdom of Westphalia ( Canton Dachrieden ) created by Napoleon , and after the Congress of Vienna in 1816 it was assigned to the district of Mühlhausen in the Prussian province of Saxony .

On September 2, 1995, Horsmar formed the new municipality of Unstruttal together with Ammern, Dachrieden, Eigenrode, Kaisershagen and Reiser.

Economy and Infrastructure

administration

Horsmar is the seat of a parish of the Evangelical Church District Mühlhausen and a forest district. The district forester was built on the foundations of the Horsmarer Warte at the Mühlhäuser Landgraben.

Companies

On the northern edge of the village there are stables for the natural cattle Unstruttal. An electrician and a bakery are located in the village itself. In the southwest of Horsmar, a taxi company and an IT service provider have settled in the buildings of the former Obermühle. A restaurant is located in the center of the village.

traffic

The B247 between Mühlhausen and Dingelstädt touches the district of Horsmar in the south. The place is connected to the main road by a connecting road. A local road in the Unstruttal connects Horsmar with the neighboring towns of Dachrieden and Zella. A narrow asphalt road leads to the former Breitenbich manor 1.5 km northwest of Horsmar. In Horsmar there is a bridge over the Unstrut. The Gotha-Leinefelde railway line passes north of the town. However, Horsmar itself does not have a train station. A regional train stop is located northeast of the neighboring town of Zella, while a regional express stop is in the eastern neighboring town of Dachrieden.

education

There is a day-care center in the south-west of the village.

societies

Since January 1970 there has been a sports club called the BSG "Traktor Horsmar". At first football was offered, later women's sports (from 1985) and table tennis were added. The sports field and the athletes' home were created in-house in the Unstruttal east of the village. In 1990 the sports club was renamed "HSV Horsmar 1990". There is also a mill association and the fire brigade association.

Attractions

Saint Pancras at Horsmar
  • The Protestant Pankratius Church is a baroque building from 1721. It replaces a previous building on the northern slope of the Unstrut that was almost completely burned down by fire. The barrel vault was decorated with colorful scenes from the life of Christ by the Horsmar painter Johannes Rieden in 1754. The altar, decorated with four Corinthian columns, dates from 1821.
  • The Backstorlinde at the southern entrance to the town is a distinguishing feature of the town. The two-stemmed winter linden tree is around 24 m high and has a trunk circumference of around 5 m. It was placed under protection as a natural monument in 1936 .
  • On the Balzenberg, about 2 km north-northeast of the locality, there are 2 old English oaks , the so-called French oaks , on the edge of a dirt road . Legend has it that three French officers were buried after a skirmish between French and Prussian troops in 1761. An oak tree was planted for each. Two of the oaks are still standing today. They were already protected as natural monuments in 1936.
  • 4.5 km of the 26 km long Mühlhausen Landgraben, a protective ditch for the Free Imperial City of Mühlhausen from the 14th century, run along the northwestern border of the Horsmar district. The old ramparts and the old trees of oak, beech and other tree species on them are interesting.

Personalities

  • Christian Wilhelm Volland (1682–1757), royal British and Brunswick-Lüneburg church and consistorial councilor, superintendent and school inspector of the imperial city of Mühlhausen

particularities

An approximately 200 year old summer linden tree at the fountain in the northwest of the town had to be felled in May 2007 for reasons of traffic safety on behalf of the municipality. The felling was initially thwarted by a local resident who decided to tie herself to the trunk. The subsequent collection of donations for an independent expert and the collection of signatures for the preservation of the tree could not ultimately prevent the felling. The mayor finally implemented the law with the help of the police. The linden tree fell against all protests in the morning hours of May 21, 2007.

Others

The current local mayor is Kay Göthling, also from Horsmar.
