Obermehler is a district of the town and rural community of Nottertal-Heilinger Heights in the Unstrut-Hainich district in Thuringia .

geography

Obermehler is located twelve kilometers (as the crow flies) northeast of the district town of Mühlhausen / Thuringia . The place consists of four districts: Obermehler, Großmehlra , Siedlung Pöthen and Siedlung Am Flughafen.

Geologically, the place is in the northwest of the Schlotheimer Graben , at the interface between the Thuringian Basin and the southeastern roof of the Dün . In the Volkenroder forest , an extensive forest area west of the Obermehler locality, is the highest point of the village ( 364.1  m above sea level ). The headwaters of the Notter , which flows through all districts, are located in the Obermehlers corridor .

history

The first documentary mention refers to events that concerned the Lords of Mehler , whose aristocratic residence existed east of Obermehler. A flat hill mentioned in Park Pöthen was interpreted as a castle hill, but an archaeological investigation is no longer possible. Großmehlra belonged to the Principality of Schwarzburg-Sondershausen from 1324 to 1918 . Obermehler was a place in the Duchy of Saxony-Gotha from 1645 to 1918 . Until the 19th century he belonged to the Amt of Volkenroda , which was an exclave of the Duchy of Saxony-Gotha.

With the discovery of potash deposits under the overburden around 1900, the construction of extensive conveyor systems and the necessary railway network began.

On July 1, 1950, the previously independent community of Großmehlra was incorporated.

The Obermehler garrison settlement was established in 1954. The Soviet military base was used to operate the military airfield, which was expanded in the following years for MIG jet fighters. In 1993 the military site was handed over and designated for civil use.

On December 31, 2019, the community of Obermehler merged with other communities to form the city and rural community of Nottertal-Heilinger Höhen. The communities were previously united in the Schlotheim administrative community, which was dissolved at the same time.

Churches

In the local situation Obermehler the Romanesque is choir tower St. Ullrich from the 12th century, in Großmehlra is the St. Vitus Church , again a choir tower, built as a simple rectangular building with an east tower , whose construction date could fall even in Roman times. Today's nave was built in 1913 as a rectangular building with a gable roof . Both churches belong to the Menteroda rectory of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Central Germany .

Shaft systems

The local chronicle reports a European record: the Pöthen I and II shafts were the deepest pits in potash mining in Europe from 1910 to 1913, at that time the mining depth had already been increased to one thousand meters. However, this made the conveyor technology immensely more expensive.
