Großmehlra is a district of the town and rural community of Nottertal-Heilinger Heights in the Unstrut-Hainich district in Thuringia .

location

Großmehlra is located northeast of Mühlhausen and immediately east of Obermehler in the northwest Schlotheimer Graben at the transition from the Thuringian Basin to the southern roof of the Dün . The Volkenroder forest borders the plateau to the west. In this area, the Notter rises as the left tributary of the Unstrut . The state roads 2093 and 2096 run through the district and connect it with the federal road 249 .

history

The village was first mentioned on May 25, 1190. Großmehlra belonged to the rule of the Principality of Schwarzburg-Sondershausen from 1324 to 1918 . The Salzmanns-Mühle von Großmehlra, which was built here in 1729, is now in Hohenfelden . A Red Army airfield was built immediately north of the town in 1957 and was heavily frequented. After the fall of the Wall , this became the Obermehler-Schlotheim airfield .

Culture and sights

In Großmehlra there is the St. Vitus Church , a choir tower church , built as a simple rectangular building with an east tower , the construction date of which could still fall into the Romanesque period . Today's nave was built in 1913 as a rectangular building with a gable roof . The church belongs to the Menteroda rectory of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Central Germany .
