history

The village was first mentioned in a document in 1130. According to this document, the landlords at that time presented the village of Pöthen as a gift to the nearby Volkenroda monastery . The place was soon relocated on the instructions of the abbot, and some of the residents moved to neighboring towns. The most important court was continued as the monastery farm. After the Reformation, monastic rule in the place ended with the secularization of the possessions. The monastery courtyard was sold to a nobleman, and the Pöthen manor was created, which belonged to the Volkenroda office . The bond with the main town of Obermehler remained through belonging to the parish, and the children were sent to school in Obermehler. At the turn of the century, geological surveys were carried out with the aim of prospecting salt deposits. The drilling was successful and led to the establishment of a mining company that had several production shafts and track systems built. Some of the farm workers and farmers became miners or machinists who hoped for a higher income from it. The mining industry also increased the number of inhabitants through the settlement of additional workers. The forest around Pöthen played a role as a military training area in the GDR era. There was an important military airfield near Schlotheim.
