The small Catholic Sanctuary Klüschen Hagi (pronounced Klüs'chen) is between Wachstedt and Martin Field at Dingelstaedt in Eichsfeld , in today's Free State of Thuringia , near the castle Gleichenstein . The name, originally "Klus Hagis", means "little hermitage of the Hagens". On the one hand, it reminds of the hermitage , which stood next to today's church from 1573 to 1620, and on the other hand, of the former town of Neuenhagen.

location

The pilgrimage site is located in a small forest valley on the northern edge of the Westerwald on the state road L2022 between waxedt and Martinfeld at an altitude of about 370 m. The valley is framed by the Bornberg (463.4 m) with the Bergsporn Schlossberg in the north, the Eichsfelder Höhe plateau (approx. 470 m) in the east and the Thomas Bridge (approx . 470 m) in the south. A small stream is fed by several sources (including the Klüschenborn and Eselsborn), which flows into the Rosoppe in front of Martinfeld .

history

Between 1100 and 1300 the Klüschen Hagis was built as the village church of the village of Neuenhagen below Gleichenstein Castle. In 1358, 22 families were counted, who were probably servants of the castle. The place became a desert in the late Middle Ages , only the church and the name Hagen remained . The pilgrimage to the Pietà from the 13th century, located in the church, has been attested since the 16th century . The church was enlarged due to the popularity of the pilgrimage and changed to Baroque style from 1751 to 1771 . Due to its affiliation to the Electorate of Mainz , Eichsfeld and thus also Klüschen Hagis remained Roman Catholic, from 1815 to 1945 it was part of the Prussian province of Saxony . Klüschen Hagis has not had its own pastor since 1820; it is looked after by the parish in waxedt.

On the west side of the chapel is a sandstone Immaculata designed between 1907 and 1910 by Wilhelm Albermann (1835–1913) , which bears the facial features of his daughter Christine Albermann.

Today's pilgrimages to Klüschen Hagis

The largest pilgrimage is the men's pilgrimage on Ascension Day , to which thousands of Catholics from the region flock to Klüschen Hagis. It was brought into being in 1957 by the Catholic male pastor for Eichsfeld, Prelate Ernst Göller (1906–1996), from 1945 rector of the mountain monastery of the Heiligenstadt School Sisters. It was considered one of the most impressive demonstrations of faith in the former GDR. Even when the weather was inconsistent, between ten and twenty thousand men came to the Hagis Chapel. Rector Göller - who also gave a courageous sermon at the 1958 Katholikentag in East Berlin - once shouted to the men: “We're not fair-weather Christians with creases in our suits, but men who are serious about their church and that Faith. ”Other pilgrimages are the Klüschen pilgrimage“ Mariä Visitation ”and the traditional costume pilgrimage in July, the pensioner pilgrimage in September and the Magdeburg pilgrimage on foot, which ends annually on the feast of the Assumption on August 15th in Klüschen.
