location

The waiting mountain is located on the Obereichsfelder Muschelkalkplatte in the Eichsfeld district immediately north of Flinsberg about six kilometers south-east of Heilbad Heiligenstadt . In the north and northeast, the districts of Geisleden and Heuthen and in the west that of Kalteneber border the mountain plateau.

The waiting mountain is easily accessible via the state roads L 1006 Heiligenstadt-Flinsberg and L 2045 Flinsberg-Heuthen.

nature

The predominantly unforested mountain is used for agriculture up to the summit, only in the north-west does the Heiligenstadt city forest reach up to the mountain. The foothills of the waiting mountain are the Eisenkopf (508.0 m) in the east and the Galgenberg (approx. 480 m) in the north . It is part of the small, only 9 hectare landscape protection area LSG Flinsberger Warte .

From the summit you have a wide view of the Obereichsfelder landscape, with a good view the following mountains can be seen in the distance:

Historical

Historically, the Madefeld corridor area can be traced on the north slope of the Warteberg , which stretched beyond the current district boundaries of Flinsberg, Heiligenstadt, Geisleden and Heuthen. Madeholz on the edge of the Heiligenstadt city forest is still known today. Nothing is known about a devastation at this place, but the Madefeld was mentioned as early as 1333, when the Burgmann on the Rusteberg Dietrich von Schadeberg sold mediatatem ... campi dicti Madenfeld to the brothers Hugo and Johann von Geisleden. Further documents are documented from the 15th and 16th centuries, enfeoffments existed for the noble lords of Kirchberg and the lords of Bodungen . The Madefeld reached in the north as far as the Galgenberg area and the area around the village of Primerode .

An old Landwehr , which can still be clearly traced in the area today , ran over the Warteberg and the Madefeld to the neighboring Eisenberg . At the highest point of the mountain plateau was a stone observation tower, the Flinsberger observation tower , traces of the terrain still show the location of the observation tower. There is no information about the historical background or the time of origin. For the waiting mountain, however, it has been proven that it was the center of a system of signal connections between the Eichsfeld castles and waiting areas. Historically, a Madeberg observatory is also known, but it is not known exactly whether it was two different observatories. Only in a letter from the municipality of Heuthen to the Canton Monecke in Heiligenstadt from the year 1812 are two waiting areas on the waiting mountain and at Flinsberg mentioned.

Presumably an old road connection through the Landwehr led past the control room, which could be connected to the two royal courts in Martinfeld and Geisleden. A second Landwehr is said to have existed from the Warteberg in a southerly direction.

additional

On the eastern edge of the hilltop there is a wayside shrine with a seating group under 2 large linden trees. At the moment there is discussion about upgrading the waiting mountain for tourism within the Eichsfeld-Hainich-Werratal nature park. A rest area was set up and several information boards were set up on the special features of the mountain and its history. South of the mountain near Flinsberg (at the foot of the 480 m high summit Auf der Kapelle ) is a center of Germany .
