The Kissel is a mountain of the western Thuringian Forest , it is located approx. 1600 m south of the Rennsteig , the forest town of Rühler Häuschen and marks the boundary of the town of Ruhla with forest fish , to the southeast the Arnsberg (secondary peak) joins. The mountain is largely forested - in the western and southern parts mainly with deciduous forest (beech) in the eastern and northern parts with spruce.

As early as 1330, a mountain Kyselinge was mentioned in the border description to the Frankenstein sales letter. The name could refer to the pending hard rock, here porphyry .

Almost 600 m south of the mountain peak is the listed hunting and forester's lodge Kissel of the Meiningen dukes , built in 1868/69 in the log cabin style, including the hotel restaurant Waldhaus Kissel ( 546.2  m above sea level ) - originally a holiday property of the state government Bad Salzungen forestry operation . Access is via the Waldhaus Kissel junction on state road 1126 about 1500 m west of Schweina .

The Kissel is the starting point for many hikers to the nearby Rennsteig, to the Altenberger See campsite or to Ruhla . In the vicinity are the remains of the medieval castle sites Alter Ringelstein and Neuer Ringelstein as well as the legendary Brautborn . The Pummpälzweg , a well-known hiking trail from the Wartburg to the district town of Bad Salzungen , leads past the Kissel .
