Karl Georg Spitzenberg (born July 5, 1860 in Martinfeld , Eichsfeld ; † January 25, 1944 there ) was a German forester , master guard , inventor and pioneer of forest cultivation (tillage, sowing with plant breeding, planting, protection of the sown seeds, care of the young plants and the soil).

His life's work includes the book Misforming the root system of the jaws and culture methods , published in 1908, as well as 34 patents on processes and devices that were granted to him in 14 countries by 1897. The Spitzenberg processes and devices achieved great prestige at national and international exhibitions.

life and work

Karl Spitzenberg was born in Martinfeld as the youngest of seven children of Margaretha Spitzenberg, née. Städler and Christoph Spitzenberg were born.

In 1881 he passed the first forestry examination, in 1888 the forester examination. He studied in Eisenach from 1895 to 1896 and in Tharandt until 1898 . Since 1896 he worked on the expansion of the rooting culture method. On December 20, 1897 he was appointed forester and worked from 1898 to 1900 in Gohra, today part of Bergheide in Niederlausitz , from 1903 to 1907 in Steinbusch, today part of Dobiegniew in Poland and from 1907 to 1928 in zckerick, which is today Polish Siekierki . On October 17, 1911, he was appointed Hegemeister. From 1926 Karl Spitzenberg had a spacious house built in his place of birth, which he lived in retirement from 1928 until his death. In the gardens around his Martinfeld house, he continued his research until the end.

Seven devices invented by Spitzenberg each received a gold medal at the 1893 World's Fair in Chicago. They were also shown at the Berlin Industrial Exhibition in 1896 and the World Exhibition in St. Louis in 1904 and in Russia in 1913.

Honors

In 1924 he was appointed the first and only honorary member of the German Försterbund. The street to his house was renamed Spitzenbergweg in his honor . A memorial stone was also placed in his honor above Martinfeld on the slopes of Martinfeld's Schimberg .
