Deilanthe is a genus of plants fromthe afternoon flower family (Aizoaceae). The botanical name of the genus is derived from the ancient Greek words δείλη deile for "evening" and ἄνθος ánthos for "blossom" or "flower" and refers to the type of flowers( Deilanthe peersii ) that only open in the evening.

description

The plants of the genus Deilanthe grow compact. Their roots are greatly thickened. The very short shoots only develop one pair of leaves per year. The leaves are rounded at the edges and at the keel, the tips are fairly flat and also rounded. Their surface is velvety. The outer wall of the epidermis contains a layer of crystal sand about 6 micrometers thick .

The one to three flowers are above bracts . There are five equal calyx lobes . Their petals are yellow, orange, or dirty reddish-yellow. The nectaries are wreath-like. The flowers open either in the afternoon or in the evening.

The capsule fruits sit on a strong stalk and are similar to those of the genus Titanopsis . The light brown, pear-shaped seeds are 0.8 to 1 millimeter long and 0.6 to 0.7 millimeters wide.

Systematics and distribution

The genus Deilanthe is distributed in South Africa in the west of the Eastern Cape Province , in the south of the Northern Cape Province and in parts of the Western Cape and Free State provinces . The plants usually grow on slate.

The first description was published in 1930 by Nicholas Edward Brown . The holotype is Deilanthe peersii . According to Heidrun Hartmann (* 1942) the genus Deilanthe includes the following species:
