The Cofrentes nuclear power plant ( Spanish Central nuclear de Cofrentes , abbreviation CNC ) is located in the east of Spain about 70 kilometers west-southwest of Valencia as the crow flies and consists of a boiling water reactor . Cofrentes is the only European NPP to collect its liquid radioactive waste in two outdoor basins before it is dumped into the river. It is true that the wastewater has already subsided somewhat inside the system; nevertheless, the activity values are in the vicinity of the plant - v. a. in special weather conditions such as heat or wind - each slightly higher than in the wider area.
The General Electric reactor with a gross electrical output of 1102 MW is the most powerful in Spain. Construction began on September 9, 1975. The reactor went critical for the first time on August 23, 1984 . It was first synchronized with the power grid on October 14, 1984, and began commercial power operation on March 11, 1985. It is the sister plant of the Swiss Leibstadt NPP , which is located between Basel and Constance.
