Althoff studio

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Althoff studios were from 1939 to 1946, a film studio in Wilhelmstrasse 116-118 (now Old Nowawes 116-118) in Potsdam-Babelsberg .

history

founding

The studios were founded in 1939 by Gustav Althoff , the co-founder of Aafa - Althoff-Amboss-Film AG , which was founded in the 1920s . First, in the north of Babelsberg, a former bar was converted into a film studio (630 m², 21 m × 30 m). At the same time, the construction of a second, larger hall (1050 m², 35 m × 30 m) by the architect Benno-Franz Moebus began next to the restaurant. In addition, there was an office building, which contained the usual functional rooms such as offices , workshops, cloakrooms and equipment , as well as an outdoor area for outdoor shots which was directly adjacent to Babelsberger Park.

Wartime

Since the Althoff studios were not part of the film studios of the Ufa group , which was actually nationalized at the time , the studio was mainly used for productions by Berliner Filmkunst GmbH , which was founded from the merger of the remaining independent producers. The entire film studio survived the war almost unscathed and was thus one of the few functional film studios immediately after the war.

Post-war until today

Since the studios and their sponsors, the Althoff-Filmatelier-AG, did not belong to Ufa, the studios were not directly under the management of the Soviet military administration in Germany after the end of the war . The studios were initially run in trust by the former Ufa employee Rimmler. As early as 1945, with the participation of Ernst Kunstmann , the dubbing of Soviet films began.

A script contract for the film The Murderers Are Between Us was signed on March 15, 1946 , and shooting began in March. Since the film was mainly about destroyed apartments as a setting and thus did not need a lot of luxury, the two studios were just sufficient.

Since the Althoff studios were the only studios approved by the Soviets for film work, the official founding of the " Deutsche Film Aktiengesellschaft " took place here on May 17, 1946 . The Soviet Colonel Sergei Ivanovich Tjulpanow , head of the political department of SMAD , handed over the license for the first German production company to the first DEFA director, Hans Klering . DEFA later set up the studio for documentary films in the former Althoff studios, which DEFA operated until the 1990s.

Most recently, the film and television production company Park Studios GmbH was located on the site as the successor .
