Princess Luise of Saxony-Hildburghausen

Charlotte Luise Friederike Amalie Alexandrine of Saxony-Hildburghausen (born January 28, 1794 in Hildburghausen , † April 6, 1825 in Biebrich ) was a princess of Saxony-Hildburghausen and by marriage Duchess of Nassau .

Life

Luise was the youngest daughter of Duke Friedrich von Sachsen-Hildburghausen (since 1826 Duke of Sachsen-Altenburg ) and his wife Charlotte von Mecklenburg-Strelitz . One of her godparents was her aunt, Queen Luise of Prussia . With her sisters Charlotte and Therese she was considered very beautiful, Luise as the prettiest of the three. Friedrich Rückert dedicated his poem “ With three moss roses ” to the princesses .

In 1809, bored Crown Prince of Bavaria Ludwig in Castle Hildburghausen order to select a bride. He decided between Luise and Therese for the latter, older of the sisters. Luise married on June 24, 1813 in the town church of Hildburghausen Wilhelm von Nassau , who three years later became Duke of Nassau as Wilhelm I. The wedding was performed by Superintendent Johannes Friedrich Gieße von Weilburg. On his return to Weilburg, the Weilburg Citizens Guard formed on the occasion of the marriage and Samuel Luja (1735–1818) composed the “Cantata for the celebration of the home of Hereditary Prince Wilhelm of Nassau with Princess Louise of Saxony-Hildburghausen” . The marriage turned unhappy. Luise's husband appeared autocratic not only in politics but also in the family circle and tyrannized his wife and children.

Luise died on April 6, 1825 shortly after the birth of her youngest daughter. In his second marriage, Duke Wilhelm Luise married Pauline von Württemberg (1810-1856). Luisenplatz and Luisenstrasse in Wiesbaden are named after Luise .
