Marie of Nassau

Princess Marie Wilhelmine Friederike Elisabeth von Nassau (born January 29, 1825 in Biebrich , Duchy of Nassau ; † March 24, 1902 in Neuwied , Duchy of Nassau) was the eighth child and fourth daughter of Wilhelm I of Nassau and wife of Hermann Fürst zu Wied . She was the mother of Elisabeth zu Wied , Queen of Romania.

Life

Marie was the daughter of Wilhelm I of Nassau (1792–1839) and his first wife, Princess Luise of Saxony-Hildburghausen (1794–1825), daughter of Friedrich, Duke of Saxony Hildburghausen, later Saxony-Altenburg.

Marie married on June 20, 1842 in Biebrich , Hermann zu Wied (1814–1864), eldest son of Johann August Karl zu Wied and Princess Sofie August zu Solms-Braunfels . They had three children:

Private life

According to the German writer Marie von Bunsen (1860–1941), Princess Marie is said to have had a relationship with the politician Franz von Roggenbach (1825–1907) and even married him in a morganatic marriage after the death of her husband .
