Jakob Freiherr von Weizsäcker (born March 4, 1970 in Heidelberg ) is a German economist and politician (SPD). He is chief economist at the Federal Ministry of Finance and was previously a member of the European Parliament from 2014 to 2019 .

Career

In 1989 he graduated from Atlantic College, Wales. He then studied mathematics, physics and computer science at the University of Bonn from 1989 to 1991 . He did his alternative service from 1991 to 1992 with the Action Reconciliation Service in Poland.

From 1992 to 1994 he studied physics (Maîtrise) at the École normal supérieure de Lyon and from 1994 to 1996 economics ( Diplôme d'études approfondies ) at the École normal supérieure (Paris) . In 1996 he worked as a research assistant at Jean-Charles Hourcade in Paris and from 1997 to 2000 with Hans-Werner Sinn at the Center for Economic Studies (CES) in Munich. He then worked briefly in venture finance. In 2001 he was a visiting scholar at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge. From 2001 to 2002 he was Siegmar Mosdorf's personal advisor at the Federal Ministry of Economics . He then went to the World Bank in Washington DC and Dushanbe (Tajikistan). From 2005 to 2010 he was a fellow at the BRUEGEL economic think tank in Brussels. From 2010 to 2014 he was department head for economic policy and tourism in the Thuringian Ministry of Economics, Labor and Technology in Erfurt. During this time he taught at the Willy Brandt School of Public Policy of the Political Science Faculty of the University of Erfurt .

He has been a member of the SPD since 1994.

In the European elections in 2014 , he was in the European Parliament elected. In January 2019, he resigned and subsequently became head of the department for fundamental issues and international economic policy in the Federal Ministry of Finance, a position that is often referred to in the media as chief economist.

Positions

In his work on European immigration policy, he called for a uniform European regulation for highly qualified immigrants from third countries and thus coined the term European blue card .

In order to create and secure a plural media public in Europe, von Weizsäcker pleads for the creation of a European public service broadcaster.

family

Jakob von Weizsäcker comes from the Palatinate - Württemberg family Weizsäcker . He is married to Eva Corino and has four children. His parents are the scientist and politician Ernst Ulrich von Weizsäcker and the biologist Christine von Weizsäcker . The German physicist, philosopher and peace researcher Carl Friedrich von Weizsäcker is his grandfather. Former German President Richard von Weizsäcker is his great-uncle.
