Christine Freifrau von Weizsäcker (born February 20, 1944 in Pforzheim as Christine Radtke) is a German biologist and environmental activist .

Life

Christine von Weizsäcker is the daughter of the doctor Arnold Radtke (1914–2008) and his wife Erika Bechtle and grew up as the oldest of five siblings. She studied biology in Freiburg , Cologne and Edinburgh . It is with the since 1969 SPD - politician and naturalist Ernst Ulrich von Weizsäcker married. They have five children together.

Christine von Weizsäcker and her husband coined the concept of error-friendliness . In addition, she made a name for herself for her longstanding scientific and political commitment to biodiversity and against genetic engineering . In particular, she was involved in the design of the Cartagena Protocol , the international agreement on biological safety, which is critical of genetic engineering .
