Life

Groninger Museum from the East

Haks studied art history in Utrecht . During his studies he was particularly interested in early Christian art . After graduating, he worked at the Archbishop's Museum in Utrecht from 1961 to 1965. Haks then worked at the Art History Institute at Utrecht University, where he became a librarian in 1966 . As a result of his initiative, a modern art working group was founded in 1968 , and he became its lecturer in 1970.

In 1978 Haks took over the management of the Groninger Museum as director. During his tenure, a new museum building was built from 1992 to 1994. The designer Alessandro Mendini developed the plans in cooperation with the architects Michele de Lucchi, Philippe Starck and Coop Himmelb (l) au . On behalf of Haks, the designer Mendini was able to start creating a concept for a new museum in 1987.

With regard to contemporary art, Haks, as museum director, pursued the goal of discovering the works of a future avant-garde as early as possible . The exhibition Haks was here (1999/2000) in the Groninger Museum showed the influence of curators on the public reception of works of art, also using the example of the Italian artists Mimmo Paladino , Enzo Cucchi and Francesco Clemente . They are artists who are counted among the transavant-garde .
