Howard Newby

Sir Howard Newby CBE (born December 10, 1947 ) is a British sociologist and was rector (Vice-Chancellor) of the University of Liverpool until December 2014 . His specialty is social change in rural England. For several years he worked for the UK government as a commissioner for the social and economic development of rural areas.

Life

Sir Howard Newby grew up in Derby ( Derbyshire ). He attended school in Etwall and then on a scholarship to Atlantic College in Wales . From 1967 he studied sociology at the University of Essex and graduated with a BA and PhD. In total, he stayed there for 21 years. From 1980 to 1983 he was Professor of Sociology and Agricultural Sociology at the University of Wisconsin – Madison . After his return to Essex, he became Dean of the Faculty of Comparative Studies in 1983 . At the same time, he became head of the data archive for the Social Science Research Council, a national body for the storage and distribution of computerized data for researchers in the private and public sectors. From 1988 to 1994 he was chairman of the research agency, which has now been restructured and renamed the Economic and Social Research Council . In 1994 he returned to the university. He was Vice Chancellor of the University of Southampton until 2001 . During this time he was President of Universities UK , the association of British universities, from 1999 to 2001 . From 2001 to 2002 he was President of the British Association for the Advancement of Science. In October 2001 he was appointed Chairman of the Board of the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE). He then became Vice Chancellor of the University of the West of England (UWE) in 2006 . After less than 15 months at UWE, it was announced in July 2007 that he would take over the position of Vice-Chancellor at the University of Liverpool from September 2008 .

Newby was 1995 Commander of the Order of the British Empire appointed and for his contributions to the Economic and Social Sciences in 2000 for his contributions to higher education for Knight Bachelor beaten. He is also a member of the Railway Heritage Committee .
