Sara Japhet (שרה יפת), alternative transcription: Sarah Yefet , (* 1934 in Petach Tikwa ), née Isaacson , is an Israeli biblical scholar. She was both the first doctoral candidate and the first female professor in this department at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem . Japhet was awarded the 2004 Israel Prize in the Bible Studies Section.

Life and teaching

Sara Isaacson's parents instilled a love of books. The father, Samuel Isaacson, had emigrated to Palestine at the age of 18 and earned his living as a farm laborer. The mother Chana, b. Chwojnik, came from Ruzhany (now Belarus) and emigrated in 1930 to what was then the British Mandate of Palestine. Her uncle Arie Leib Chwojnik had founded a hospital in Tel Aviv where Chana Chwojnik worked as a nurse.

Sara Isaacson attended high school in Herzliya . After graduating from high school, she began training at the Jerusalem David Jelin Teachers' College. In addition to her education degree, she also earned a bachelor's degree in Bible Studies and Hebrew Literature from the Hebrew University. She referred to Isac Leo Seeligmann as her academic teacher . In 1973 she received her doctorate ( summa cum laude ). She then belonged to the teaching staff of the Faculty of Biblical Studies, initially as a lecturer, from 1987 until her retirement in 2003 as a professor ( Yehezkel Kaufmann Professor of Bible ). She has held visiting professorships at the University of California , Harvard University and the Jewish Theological Seminary . In 2003 she took over the management of the Israeli National Library .

Sara Japhet's main research interests are the biblical books of the Chronicle and the history of Israel in the Persian period.

Sara Japhet was married and has four children. One of her sons is Gilad Japhet , founder and later CEO of the genealogical internet platform MyHeritage .

Awards

  • She was awarded the Israel Prize in 2004 for her research on Jewish literature from the Persian period, in particular the Books of Chronicle .
