Vetus Testamentum (VT) is a specialist journal on topics related to the Old Testament and has been published quarterly by Brill publishing house in Leiden , the Netherlands , since 1951 . Its founding was one of the goals of the International Organization for the Study of the Old Testament, founded in Leiden in 1950 . The journal was intended to serve as an international forum for Old Testament science and at the same time act as a counterweight to the journal for Old Testament science (ZAW) , which was discredited during the rule of National Socialism and in which some well-known researchers no longer wanted to publish.

The magazine contains articles and reviews in English, German and French. Since 1953 it has been supplemented by a series of monographs, Supplements to Vetus Testamentum . The current editor of the magazine is Annette Schellenberg .
