Michael Myers (judge)
Sir Michael Myers (born September 7, 1873 in Motueka , † April 8, 1950 in Wellington ) was the sixth Chief Justice of New Zealand from 1929 to 1946 . Between 1930 and 1941 he served temporarily as Administrator of the Government .
Education and career
Michael Myers was on September 7, 1873 as the 13th child of Jewish parents, Judah Myers, a businessman and his wife Eve Solomon in Motueka born. Myers attended Thorndon School in Wellington and then Wellington College . In 1897 he graduated from Canterbury College with a Bachelor of Laws .
On May 3, 1929, Myers was appointed Chief Justice of New Zealand to succeed Charles Skerrett . Two years later, in December 1931, he was appointed to the British Judicial Committee of the Privy Council , but was able to attend its meetings for the first time when he visited London in 1936 . In 1945 he took part in the conference in San Francisco , from which the United Nations emerged . He participated in the drafting of the constitution by the International Court of Justice . On September 6 of the same year, he resigned from his post as the country's chief judge, but was reappointed for another year, but then resigned for good on August 7, 1946. His successor in office was Humphrey O'Leary .
Myers died in Wellington in 1950 at the age of 76.
He was with Estelle Miriam, geb. Salom (1876–1960) married.
Awards
Myers was named King's Counsel in 1922 and knighted as Knight Commander of the Order of St. Michael and St. George in 1930 and raised to Knight Grand Cross of the same Order in 1937 . In 1944 he got an honorary place in the Inner Temple , one of the four English bar associations in London.
