Humphrey O'Leary
Sir Humphrey Francis O'Leary (born February 12, 1886 in Blenheim , † October 16, 1953 in Auckland ) was the seventh Chief Justice of New Zealand from 1946 to 1953 .
Since father, descendant of Irish immigrants, was born in Redwoodtown in the Wairau Valley in the Marlborough District in 1886 . He was a blacksmith and moved to Masterton . Initially, Humphrey attended a Catholic school. But since he couldn't get along there, his father sent him to a public school. He received a fellowship from the Wellington Education Board and, in 1899, a fellowship from the Queen. This enabled him to attend Wellington College . The scholarship also covered a three-year university visit. In 1902 he enrolled in law school at Victoria College .
Professional career
Humphrey O'Leary received a Bachelor of Laws degree in 1908 , and from 1908 to 1909 he was an official of rugby at the New Zealand universities. He first worked for Wilford and Levi , then partnered with O'Leary and Kelly with a college friend, Frank Kelly . In 1919 he was asked to join the Wellington law firm, which later traded as Bell Gully .
O'Leary was President of the Wellington Law Society from 1921 to 1922 and President of the New Zealand Law Society from 1935 to 1946 , a member of the Victoria University College Council and the Senate of the University of New Zealand .
He was the seventh Chief Justice of New Zealand from August 12, 1946 until his death in 1953 . His predecessor was Michael Myers , his successor Harold Barrowclough .
Honors
He became a member of the King's Counsel in 1935 , Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George in 1947 and Honorable Master of the Bench of the Inner Temple in London in 1948 .
Private life
O'Leary married Lillian Gallagher in 1912 and they had a son. He died in Auckland on October 16, 1953, at the age of 67 .
